Hitting the Ice in Early January for some Fishing

Updated: Jun 12, 2022

Along the way, I walk for many days and nights. Traveling alone I pull my sled across frozen lakes. Out in the cold searching for my next meal. Nothing is more satisfying than obtaining a meal from the wild. I enjoy the fresh cold breeze, the rush when a flag is up. Finding a sense of peace as I sit alone staring at the bobber.

Even if you have a good ice auger, fishing in the winter is one of the toughest undertakings. Though there are anglers created for fishing in the winter, you might still need some tricks to help you catch fish. This post shares five tips & treats for early fishing.

1. Fish The Prime Times

Many fish species are mainly active early in the morning, so that is when you should grab your fishing gear and do your thing. But if you are not a morning person, you can still make a good catch late in the afternoon. If you go with this schedule, you will still have enough time to spend with your loved ones.

2. Choose Location Wisely

When the waters ice over, many fish will not move very far from where they were before the freeze. Therefore, pick the ideal location, and if the ice is too much, you can use your ice auger to create enough fishing space. Don’t do fishing in shallow parts of the lake as you are less likely to catch any fish there.

3. Stay Flexible

Ice fishing is tough, and where you are fishing determines how successful you will be. If you are not getting any catch where you are, then it is time to move. Suppose you are using a boat, there is no need to stay in a single spot. Try deep-sea fishing and see if you get any bites.

4. Pick The Right Gear

No matter how good you are, your fishing gear can be the reason you are not catching any fish. Therefore, when doing ice fishing in the winter, you want to pick the ideal gear that will enhance your productivity. Unless you do that, you will spend the whole day without a single reason to smile.

5. Don’t Overdo It

Fishing in the winter is all fun, but you shouldn’t overdo it even if there is an ice house to keep your daily catch. Give yourself time to relax and think about what you have been doing wrong. This point might seem and sound trivial, but it will help you improve.

Final Thoughts

In the winter, make sure that you are not stuck in a single place. Start fishing in the morning, and when you need more catch, come back in the afternoon. Use an ice house near you to keep your catch if you are not going to stop sooner. The tips shared above will enhance your chances of success.
